A basic belief of this Substack is that you should do what you want but accept that there are costs to all choices. Sometimes these costs are material, sometimes they come in the form of opportunity costs, sometimes they are harder to quantify and are more about prestige and such. There is no such thing as the all-winning, cost-free choice, though there are prices you might find yourself more than willing to pay, as well as prices you simply cannot pay even if you want to.
The limitation of this approach is that choices, costs, and outcomes are not guaranteed or up-front. Nobody makes these choices from a place of perfect knowledge and freedom. Unlike in a fairy tale, you are not offered three boxes and told to choose. Nor is it possible to know how conditions will suddenly and irrevocably change. Etc etc etc.
