I’ve been asked to pass along a comment from the peanut gallery: “XCX is supposed to be in capital letters not lowercase letters”

As the messenger here I am feeling quite distressed

nothing personal kid dog meme dot jpeg

honestly i don't really know the degree to which one should respect artist' random decisions to change how they style themselves professionally. like it's kind of silly. but this case is funny because the reason i used "xcx" (lowercase) was precisely to avoid somebody being like "actually it's lowercase now…" haha

(1) sending this to my pro-Charli, Taylor-skeptical group chat currently blowing up over this

(2) thank you for the Hannah Frances mention, this is new to me and Extremely My Shit (feels like her deal is similar to Laura Marling, who i adore)

also like ftr i fully support being grumpy about debuting at #2. one day it will happen to taylor at the hands of like… morgan wallen… and i'm sure i'll be like 😡😡😡 art is dead 😡😡😡

charli did probably get a big sales boost from this (billie certainly did), but obviously that's like… not why taylor does any of this lol

haha. now that i know that apparently she didn't need to do the digital album drop at all i'm really scratching my head about why she did.

i mean i don't think taylor is sitting in a room with a hand hovering over a big Release More Variants button, presumably it's more like somebody on her team has instructions that if the gap between taylor and her nearest competitor is X, do Y. so maybe the X was 6k (which seems like it would have been the gap without the downloads).

i love laura marling! two other very small artists i like on spotify are Bryn Battani and Sarah Mary Chadwick. also, not similarly tiny, she's a pop act, but i think Griff is about to get big and i recommend her EP.

genuine question: when people say a famous singer has obviously released a song about another public figure, barring any unique personal identifiers, is it naive of me to think that the song could just as easily be about someone the singer knows, who public has no knowledge of? most of the time i never organically detect this stuff

oh no not naive at all and actually i often feel this way when it comes to taylor's own songs! people way overestimate what they know and / or stuff is just fiction. in this specific case i think the reasons it's clearly about taylor are:

1) certain lines make it clear that it's about somebody who was dating somebody in the same band as Charli xcx's boyfriend, which means it's somebody who was dating somebody on the 1975, which Taylor was (matty healy)

2) it's also about somebody in the same career as her

just those two things would not make it obviously "about Taylor," just possibly about her. it could have been about (for instance) matty's long term girlfriend before her, fka twigs, imho. but also

3) charli posted the title of the song as a tweet without any context the same day the last taylor album came out… this is about as close as to pure confirmation as you get without the singer saying "yes I wrote that song about so and so."

and "sympathy is a knife" is not a diss track… it's about somebody making you feel insecure because they're nice to you. so if taylor is mad about it, i think she's being kind of silly. but atp i think… if it's not about taylor charli wants people to think it is.

i'm just nodding along to this... you're right, that is sort of the smoking gun that she goes out of her way to put in there. i like charli's music a lot, but obviously not enough to know who she's dating!!! the image of her in my mind isn't dating anyone at all, just hanging out in the club with her cool queer friends and going on road trips with them

yeah i only know this stuff bc of my Taylor watching… even though her music is like, full of real people's actual names and such you're right that it doesn't feel personal at all.
