A few weeks ago—or really whenever it was that it came out, which was I guess… February—so two months ago—not that it matters—some moment in time ago, I was watching Taylor Tomlinson’s1 new Netflix special. She’s got a bit in it when she talks about not being able to sleep and then asks if anybody in the crowd has a sleep tip she hasn’t heard. She warns that if you give her obvious advice you will be escorted from the room. As a bad sleeper who hates receiving advice myself I watched this part of her routine feeling both very seen and a little bit curious as to whether or not I was going to get any tips about how to sleep. (Answer: no, because I’m not going to learn how to do a handstand.)
I sometimes feel like my body produces sleep antibodies: if a trick works once it never works again. “Trick” might mean prescription medicine, or supplements, or a dumb herbal tea, or counting backwards from a hundred, or so on and so forth. Some things are necessary but…
